Eye Strain

Relieve tired eyes and protect your vision with traditional techniques for the digital age.

Traditional Wisdom

In traditional Chinese wellness, eye health is connected to liver function – when the liver is overworked from screen time, stress, or poor sleep, the eyes suffer first. Think of it as the liver's "overflow valve" showing strain. Protecting your eyes means supporting your liver.

Note: This is traditional wellness wisdom, not medical advice. For persistent vision changes, please consult an optometrist.

Practical Solutions

1

Ancient Eye Palming Technique

5 min Easy

What You Need:

  • Quiet space with comfortable seating
  • Warm palms (rub together first)
  • Soft, relaxing environment

Steps:

  1. 1. Rub palms together vigorously for 10 seconds
  2. 2. Close eyes, cup palms over both eyes
  3. 3. Don't press – just create darkness
  4. 4. Breathe deeply, think of relaxing scenes
  5. 5. Hold for 2-5 minutes, remove slowly

Tip: Do this every 2 hours of screen time. The darkness allows eye muscles to completely relax while the warmth soothes tired nerves.

Traditional Eye Stretches

3 min Easy

The Exercises:

  1. 1. Up & Down: Look up 5 sec, down 5 sec
  2. 2. Side to Side: Look left 5 sec, right 5 sec
  3. 3. Diagonals: Trace an X pattern slowly
  4. 4. Circles: Roll eyes clockwise, then counter
  5. 5. Focus Near/Far: Focus on finger, then distant object

Key Points:

  • Move head with eyes, not just eyes
  • Keep movements slow and smooth
  • Don't strain – gentle movement only
  • Repeat each exercise 3-5 times

Ancient Practice: These exercises were documented in Chinese martial arts traditions where warriors needed exceptional vision. The movements exercise all six eye muscles equally.

Goji Berry Eye Tea

5 min prep Easy

Ingredients:

  • Goji berries (15-20) - "bright eyes"
  • Chrysanthemum (3-5 flowers) - cooling
  • Hot water (300ml)
  • Honey (optional, to taste)

Steps:

  1. 1. Rinse goji berries with cool water
  2. 2. Place berries and chrysanthemum in cup
  3. 3. Pour hot water (80°C/176°F)
  4. 4. Steep 5-8 minutes
  5. 5. Drink and eat berries too!

Why It Works: Goji berries contain zeaxanthin and lutein – antioxidants specifically concentrated in the retina. Chinese medicine has used goji for "bright eyes" for over 2,000 years.
