Suan Zao Ren Tea

The classic TCM sleep herb — sour jujube seeds that calm the spirit.

What is Suan Zao Ren?

Suan Zao Ren (酸枣仁, Ziziphus spinosa) is the seed of the sour jujube plant, one of the most beloved and frequently used herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine for insomnia, anxiety, and palpitations. It's the primary herb in the famous formula "Suan Zao Ren Tang" (Sour Jujube Decoction), used for over 1,000 years.

In TCM theory, Suan Zao Ren nourishes heart blood and calms the shen (spirit). When heart blood is deficient — a common pattern in chronic stress and anxiety — the spirit becomes restless and sleep is disturbed. Suan Zao Ren addresses this by nourishing and quieting.

Modern research shows Suan Zoa Ren contains compounds that bind to GABA receptors, the same mechanism as some sleep medications — but gently and without dependence.

TCM Formula: Suan Zao Ren Tang (Simplified)

The classic formula combines Suan Zao Ren with supporting herbs. A common home variation:

  • Suan Zao Ren — 15g (primary, calms spirit)
  • Fu Ling (Poria mushroom) — 10g (drains dampness, calms mind)
  • Chuan Xiong ( Sichuan lovage) — 5g (invigorates blood)
  • Zhi Gan Cao (honey-fried licorice) — 3g (harmonizes)

Simmer all herbs together for 30 min. Drink as a tea. This formula is gentle enough for regular evening use.

Where to Buy

Suan Zao Ren is available at Chinese herbal shops, Asian grocery stores, and online retailers (Amazon, specialty TCM shops). Look for "Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphus spinosa)" — the crushed/ground form extracts better than whole seeds. Keep sealed in a cool, dry place.
