Peony Tea
White peony root — a gentle herb that softens emotions and nourishes liver blood.
Bai Shao in TCM
Bai Shao (白芍, Radix Paeoniae Alba) — white peony root — is one of the most frequently used herbs in TCM. Its primary actions are nourishing liver blood and softening the liver, which makes it exceptionally effective for anxiety related to liver qi stagnation.
In TCM, the liver governs the smooth flow of qi. When emotions are held in — frustration, anger, resentment — liver qi stagnates, leading to anxiety, irritability, mood swings, and physical tension. Bai Shao doesn't force qi to move; it relaxes and softens, allowing natural flow to return. It's the "peaceful mediator" of the liver.
Bai Shao is also deeply nourishing for blood — particularly important for women, whose emotional wellbeing is closely tied to liver blood health (connected to the menstrual cycle and hormonal changes).

TCM Insight
Bai Shao is the herb of "softening." In TCM philosophy,硬的 rigidity creates stagnation and suffering. Bai Shao teaches a different approach — instead of forcing change, it softens the rigid patterns that trap us in anxiety and frustration. A perfect herb for our times.
