Understanding Generalized Anxiety
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by persistent, excessive worry about many things — work, health, family, finances — that is difficult to control. Unlike anxiety triggered by specific events, GAD creates a constant low-grade background hum of dread.
In TCM, GAD is primarily a spleen and heart pattern — overthinking (spleen) worrying and depleting heart blood, while kidney essence deficiency fails to anchor the spirit. The mind races without root stability. Treatment focuses on nourishing heart blood, strengthening spleen qi, and grounding the nervous system.
Signs of GAD
Worrying about everything and nothing
Difficulty controlling the worry
Racing thoughts that won't settle
Muscle tension and fatigue
Sleep disturbances
Difficulty concentrating
Solutions
Worry Journal — 20-Minute Dump
Set a timer for 20 minutes. Write down ALL your worries without editing. Get them out of your head and onto paper. When the timer ends, close the journal. This creates psychological "off-switch" for worry cycles.
Chamomile Tea — Twice Daily
Drink chamomile tea morning and evening. Studies show chamomile significantly reduces generalized anxiety symptoms over 8 weeks. The ritual itself is calming.
Body Scan — Nightly Reset
10 minutes of body scan before bed each night breaks the day's accumulated tension and worry. It separates you from your thoughts and back into your body — the only place peace exists.
When to Seek Help
If worry significantly disrupts your sleep, work, or relationships for more than 6 months, consider speaking with a mental health professional. GAD is highly treatable with therapy (CBT) and/or medication. These practices complement professional care.
